Tom Petty, who is scheduled to appear at the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, Sat 28APR12, has reported that a 1967 Blonde Rickenbacker, a 1967 Epiphone Sheridan,
a 1965 Gibson SG TV Jr., a Fender Broadcaster, and a Dusenberg Mike Campbell Model were recently stolen from a sound stage in CA.

Don't know why Petty would play vintage instruments on tour

Right? Yet a lot of guys do.

Ron Woods toured the same rack for, like, forever.

Tom likes to play the axes he likes.

Once he 'figgered it out', Jerry Garcia toured and recorded with the same handful of guitars. My faves, Wolf and Tiger..... although I wouldn't mind having Alligator (love me a nice strat).

Note that, after tripping through alll kinds of guitars, Bobby Weir has setttled down on a single Tele that belonged to his brother.

All it takes is a tele and a good board.

(Nowhere to hide on a tele)

wait...so if you don't play a tele, you're somehow hiding?

Pretty dumb to sell sell the thing at an LA pawn shop, as if they weren't all on high alert for the instruments.

I recovered a WW11 vintage herringbone d28 for a founding member of the Cache Valley Drifters (who happened to help me pick out my first brand new D28... long ago) .

The 'bone' was stolen from his vehicle as they were breaking down their stage.

A few days later, a surfer who knew I played told me he knew a great deal on a Martin. Light bulb!! I called the rightful owner, set up a buy for $250 to take place in the beach parking lot.

I showed up, checked out the guitar - no harm, no foul - then offered not to call the cops in lieu of the $250.

It's a great feeling when nice instruments come home.
