Hi,

I maybe changing jobs very soon and plan to move the funds from my company 401K to a traditional 401K with TD Ameritrade.

My assets in the company 401K include company stock. Should I sell the company stock? I am asking this question because I read somewhere that there is some advantage in long v/s short term tax benefit with company stock?

Please advise.

Thanks!

You should check with your employer and/or the company that administers your 401k plan to see what options are available. In certain cases you can withdraw employer stock separate from the rest of the plan and pay taxes on the cost basis of the stock. This may or may not be of benefit to you.

Why not move it to an IRA?

Read up on Net Unrealized Appreciation (NUA) in Publication 575. Let us know if you have any questions.
