Connelly seems to be getting off on tie-ins between all his different novels. Void Moon was a standalone, and Blood Work was also. Yet he later tied in Blood Work to Bosch, and this latest novel ties in Blood Work, Bosch, Void Moon, and The Poet in one swell foop. Some of it I didn't spot until I read Connelly's message board, but his big fans are all over it.

I saw Connelly speak in person a couple years ago, and he said he took Harry out of the department because he was running out of ideas to write about. I think he's exhausted the Harry-gone-private aspect now, and Harry is considering an offer to go back on the force in The Narrows. It's not a bad book at all, still better than most.
