On 8/3/22, Costco Wholesale reported sales results for July 2022. The reported results of $16.85 Billion was an increase of 10.8% compared to the $15.21 Billion during July of 2021. Like previous months, we will see July remain a solid sales month for Costco both domestically, and abroad once all things have been considered. July comps look strong year over year compared with the July 2021 numbers.

July comps for e-commerce were up by 10.2%. To recap, Costco’s e-commerce segment performance includes the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia.

July Sales Numbers:

Comparable sales in the United States were up 11.4%. Canada was up 11.7%, while other international sales were up by 0.7%. Overall, total company comparable sales increased by 10.0%. Overall, these figures suggest healthy customer traffic and spending.

Comparable Sales (Jul ‘22)

U.S. 11.4%
Canada 11.7%
Other International 0.7%
Total Company 10.0%
E-Commerce 10.2%

The same as previous reports, we will look at comparable sales excluding gasoline price deflation and foreign exchange impacts. This view of the sales gives us a clearer view of comparable sales growth (or decline) if all other factors remained the same.

Comparable Sales (ex-Gasoline Price & Foreign Exchange - Jul ‘22)

U.S. 5.8%
Canada 11.5%
Other International 9.4%
Total Company 7.0%
E-Commerce 11.5%

Approximately 69% of Costco’s 834 warehouses are located within the United States. This leaves roughly a third of Costco’s warehouses exposed to potential positive or negative impacts from fluctuations in the US Dollar as well as food and gasoline prices.
