Help! My teenage son is trying to apply for a student loan, but the lender can't find matching information for him at the credit agencies. When they enter his SSN and name, nothing comes up. He went down to the SSA and they show his information is valid. Any thoughts?
If you have never had credit, you don't have a credit report. You could try placing him as an authorized user on your credit card. Once he is in the system, you can then remove him from the account.
Has he had any loans or credit cards? I don't think the credit agencies would have anything if he hasn't. Jean
Also, I would think a good lender would know that and ask him if he has had credit before.
And I know that Direct Federal loans don't require previous credit history. Is he going to a private lender?Ishtar
for many kids, the Stafford Loans (called Guaranteed Student Loans when I was a kid) were how one started building credit history...I would not expect most people <18 to have any credit history.peace & starting somewheret
My teenage son is trying to apply for a student loan, but the lender can't find matching information for him at the credit agencies. Our 21 yr old student is in the same boat. She pays for everything with cash, so she doesn't have a credit history. But a student loan shouldn't require a credit check. Did he complete a FAFSA?LWW
