The website Empty Wheel has a guest writer telling the story of how the immigration laws of the US have affected her family since the very first one was passed in 1882. In her education her family's experience was mentioned in footnotes. It is a good article, well worth the time to read.

good thought provoking article, thanks for posting.

This "whitewashing" of actual American history is a real problem for
our country. It's like a certain segment of the population wants to believe
that John Wayne westerns are actually true American history. And a pretty large swath
of the American populace gets it's "facts" from TV. There are so many hypocrisies in
American culture, and that drives American politics.

It's hard to hold yourself out as "exceptionally shiny", when your country was founded in genocide and built on slavery.
