I have gotten into using hog-wire for trellises, tomato cages. It's heavier-duty, 4 gauge wire with 4x4 inch openings. It is totally strong enough to stand on it's own. Only "problem" is that it comes in 16-foot lengths, so be prepared to cut and carry (meaning know what you want going in).

For tomato cages, can cut squares out so there is more space. I use a sawzall to cut so it's flush, but bolt cutters work well

I have used chicken wire (2" hexagon) supported on steel fence posts driven in at about a 30 deg angle. Cucumbers hang below the wire making them easy to pick.
