Ft Smith & Evansville are union plants - surprise, as was most of Maytag. Whirlpool plants in Clyde (washers) Marion (dryers) and Findlay (dishwashers) are all non-union plants in Ohio.
Whirlpool Corp. will fire about 1,200 workers in Arkansas and Indiana and shift some of the production to a lower-cost factory in Mexico.

Whirlpool said it will cut 700 jobs at its Fort Smith, Arkansas, plant in the first half of 2008 and move the work to a refrigerator factory in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. An additional 500 Evansville, IN employees will be fired in 2007 because of declining demand for top-freezer models, the Benton Harbor, Michigan based company said.

CEO Jeff Fettig bought smaller rival Maytag Corp. in March for $1.68 billion to gain market share and fend off competition from Asian manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Whirlpool has shifted some production to Whirlpool factories in countries such as Mexico, where workers are paid less than in the U.S.

Whirlpool previously cut 940 positions at the Arkansas plant this year and added the production at the plant in Mexico. Whirlpool has also shifted work and positions from a factory in Maytag's former hometown of Newton, Iowa, to facilities in Ohio and Amana, Iowa.
