Have been looking at new cars and saw that continuously variable transmissions (CVT's) are coming out on the market. I liked having a manual (except in stop-and-go traffic); am temporarily an automatic convert- would like to maybe get a CVT, but don't really want to be a beta tester. Any advice appreciated.

CVT's have actually been out for awhile. The late 1980's Subaru Justy had a CVT available, and they've had a Honda Civic with a CVT out for awhile. It was just not a big seller (didn't get as much attention as the Insight and Civic Hybrids).

Any CVT out there now really isn't in a "beta test" mode, they're ready for the real world.
