One thing I don't like about opening both at the same time is I am forced to decide on the mix right away and can not change later (since there would be a Vanguard IRA and an Ameritrade IRA).

You could always send a "custodian to custodian transfer form" and tell one of the companies to retrieve X dollars from the other. Well - maybe "always" is an exagerattion - there may be a limit on the number of times per year, but once or twice is probably often enough.
