DD: My parents are retired and Dad always ran the finances in the household. Unfortunately the time has come for Mom to take this over and to say that she is completely overwhelmed would be an understatement.

This happened to my Mom. Dad became incapacitated and she had to do things she had never done before. Her life was simpler than your Mom's. Income was social Security and their CD's. She basically put everything on a cash basis. Paid all bills in cash. She got cash when a CD matured. She rolled most over and took what she needed. Children of the depression, they spread their savings over several banks.

Side story: Once she got home from the bank and counted her money. She had $100 too much! She got back in her car and drove to the bank, which was closed. She tapped on the door until someone came to see what she wanted. Sure enough the teller was frantically counting the till, trying to reconcile. When Mom gave her the $100 bill, the lady cried. You can believe Mom got the VIP treatment at that bank from that point forward.
