DW & I just signed up for Social Security benefits. I'm at FRA & she's 6 mo past. I filed and she's getting 1/2 of mine letting her's ride until she 70. Financially we don't need Social Security benefits, however, we're trying to maximize our income given health and life expectancy.

A Social Security agent called and after clarifying the details of our claims, asked if we wished to postpone taking benefits for a couple of months. Delaying two months would increase my monthly benefit about $18 for each month delayed and half that for DW's spousal benefit.

Delaying would cost us two months of 1.5 x my benefit, in return we get a $53/mo increase for 3.5 years, then when DW turns 70 drawing on her benefits, the increase drops to $36/mo after that.

My calculations show a 17 year break even point, so I'll be 83. We declined his offer. However, if we were not using the spousal benefit for DW, the break even point would be 12.5 years and I'll be 78.5, probably worth delaying a couple of months.

The reason for sharing this is the realization that the advantage of waiting is significantly reduced by DW's switching to her own benefits.
