Chris Murphy is a 1st year Dem. senator from CT. His only homeless agenda right now is a better understanding of struggles that street people face. He spent his vacation day on Monday shadowing a man who's lost everything. As he followed "Nick" around, he Tweeted what was going on and his reflections on Nick's routine.

I've decided to quote Murphy's one-sentence summary thought after 8 hours with Nick before briefly detailing some of the components of their time together:

"It's unacceptable that people in the richest state in the richest nation in the world should have to live this dehumanizing experience."

(Nick's druggie dad got him hooked on crack at 13...he was a ward of the state 2 yrs. later....still graduated high school and held several sales jobs...became unemployed in 013, lost his home and was one of the 1.3M losing benefits on 12/28)

*. Methadone clinic appointment.

*. At a halfway house at 7:30A...required to leave, job-hunt, and go to support groups.

*. hung out at Dunkin' 'til the New Haven free public library opened....Nick snags a PC and submits some applications.....uses his shelter's address on them....tells Murphy he's well-aware by now that employers aren't favorable to people with no permanent residence they can list.

*. Murphy Tweets Nick's thorny Catch-22....no job-no way to buy a home-no job opportunity w/o one.

*. AA meeting, soup kitchen lunch together.

*. Nick introduces senator to a supportive "sober friend".....3-way conversation 'til return to shelter at 3..... already a line out the door waiting for a bed that night.....not enough beds to go around, many turned away to "fend."

Murphy, admittedly, walked only a short 8-hour walk with a downtrodden guy but got an education in one of the country's major social problems nevertheless.
