Detroit — Detroit Water and Sewerage workers continued to picket outside the city's wastewater treatment plant Thursday, even as the department moved to terminate more than 30 employees who started Sunday's strike.

Department officials confirmed that Director Sue McCormick sent letters to 34 employees notifying them of their immediate suspension and pending termination for illegally walking off the job.

A day after the strike began, U.S. District Judge Sean Cox issued a temporary restraining order commanding the union to return to work. Strikes by public employees are illegal and the workers face the risk of termination. In the past, the union has been able to negotiate fired workers' returns.

The local is at odds with its umbrella agency, AFSCME Council 25, which asked the workers Monday to obey Cox's order. A few pickets held signs saying Local 207 was on strike and protested outside the AFSCME Council offices Tuesday evening.

Not only are Dems now firing union members in Detroit over an illegal strike but the local is fighting AFSCME to boot. Also keep in mind that Detroit Water and Sewer doesn't just supply water to Detroit, most of the suburbs around Detroit get their water from Detroit Water and Sewer too (which was part of the reason the court moved so quickly to tell the striking workers to get back to work, MILLIONS of people use that water system, including countless schools and hospitals!)
