Howdy all.

I have had a breakthrough in my health and my depression. I wanted
to let people know and also pass on what I have learned. After
being depressed for more than a year I was not happy with my
progress. I was taking 30mg of Celexa and it had moved me from the
severe depression to a moderate one. I was still tired and sedated
all the time though.

I had a complete physical which turned up nothing new. Then my pdoc
sent me for a bunch of blood tests. As he was filling out the form
for the tests I meekly asked him to test my testosterone levels. He
agreed. Two weeks later the tests came back, everything was normal,
except the testosterone which was very, very low (low for an 80 year
old man, too low for my 43 years).

I started taking Andriol (a testosterone replacement supplement) and
within 2 hours my head cleared. Over the past few weeks my energy
level increased. I stopped sleeping 14 hours a day. My mood
brightened and my thinking became clearer. I have stopped taking
the Celexa now (I have a sex life again, yeah!). There are no
symptoms of the depression left. It has been a long time since I
have felt this good.

I am still doing research and working with my doctors. I want to
know why the testosterone level dropped so far (this is not NORMAL
aging!). I also want to know what else I don't know. It could have
been years before a doctor checked my testosterone level had I not
done the research and insisted on it. What else don't I know about.

If you have been depressed for a while and are not satisfied with
your progress, I recommend getting a complete check of your hormone
levels done. I am sure that I am the exception but you want to try
everything to get well.

Here is the list of hormone I have found in my research that can
have a direct or indirect impact on depression. The list is the
same for men and woman but the levels of some hormones are different
between the sexes.

Thyroid (TSH, T3, T4)
Testosterone (Total AND Bound Testosterone)
Estragen (and Estradiol)
Human Growth Hormone

A test for diabtetes or hypoglycemia is also a good idea.

Depression is a big hairy complex beast that we understand poorly.
Don't settle for less of a recovery that is possible. Don't let any
one doctor or specialty tell you that this is as far as you can go.

Kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Good luck to everyone,
