What other than desparation can this be attributed to --- dragging occurrances from the 1960's fifty years - that is FIFTY YEARS ago - into politics today as though they were germane arguments.

I'll go them one better if that is true... In Mississippi, Alabama and MANY other southern states, white Democrats riding at night burned crosses in front of black families homes, dragged black men and women out of their homes and caused physical injury to those poor people. Not only that, a current SENATOR from West Virginia - one white man named Robert Byrd - was once a member of this night-rider group, the Ku Klux Klan!

Is that a germane argument?

No?

Then WHY is this Democratic argument in Missouri any more germane?

The true answer? It is not germane. The facts are that poll watchers are not "phony cops" and cannot 'turn away nor intimidate voters'. If the interest is in having fair elections, where is the objection. If the interest is otherwise, I understand the objection and encourage more poll watchers because someone has something to hide!

"ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri's Republican Party wants a Democratic-aligned group to stop circulating a get-out-the-vote flier that includes a 1960s photograph of a firefighter hosing a black man that reads: "This is what they used to do to keep us from voting."

The America Coming Together handout accuses Republicans of conspiring to suppress the black vote through intimidation and such tactics as putting "phony cops at polling places - but only in African American neighborhoods."

"They make African-American voters stand in line for hours, then turn them away from the polls," the flier reads. "Now (U.S. Attorney General) John Ashcroft is trying to prevent African-Americans from registering to vote at all."
