Discrimination on the basis of income and on the basis of family status are both illegal.

I agree with family status not being a factor for discrimination but I'm certain you can set income limits for screening tenants. I have frequently seen "must have monthly income of at least 3x the rent" stated in ads. Perhaps you meant that you couldn't discriminate based on the source of the income? As in the case where it comes from welfare or maybe child support.
