Does BLX withhold part of dividends? There was an answer on an earlier thread, but it was a "guess" answer. I want to know for sure because I am trying to buy as much stocks in an IRA as I can and put the ones that withhold in my brokerage.

Thanks,
eric2800 who wants to be long BLX.

Hi Eric,

I believe (not 100% sure) that there is a 10% withholding tax on dividends paid by Panamanian companies. Maybe this isn't any better a answer than you've already gotten. Maybe one of the large F Fools will chime in.

John

While there is a 10% witholding tax on Panamanian dividends, Bladex has been granted a special exemption that eliminates tax obligations as well as the dividend witholding (p. 66 of 20-F). This exemption may not last forever, but currently, the company doesn't pay taxes and there is no witholding of dividends for shareholders.

US shareholders are still subject to the US dividend tax, though.

Thanks mule and snake!

Well that's good and also screwed up too. Guess I'll put it in the brokerage.
