Do not forget also the tuition and fees deduction (capped at $4,000 and MAGI in the $65,000's (?) for a single filer, only $2,000 if AGI is above that to about $80k AGI.). In the 25% bracket, T&F deduction is worth more than lifetime learning credit, but there may be a range where you can take more lifetime learning credit, since it is capped at $10,000.

Turbotax will almost certainly figure out the deduction exactly right.

- who now says take your 1098 deductions whenever you can, and whose own now multi-decade student loan saga in the Dantean Hell of debt anxiety, forms processing, crass servicing employees, nasty school registration officials who should be thankful (thankful! Right?) that they are getting tuition money in, and who did I forget? Oh, yes, dealing with careless monolithic corporate bureaucracies who just want to suck the lifeblood out of young people just trying to improve themselves in the face of callous political higher-ed policies prompted by essentially jealous people or wealthy ones whose ideas of giving their OWN kids a leg up is to break the legs of the kids' competition, eh where am I going with this? Oh, I want to mention that the only balm that prevents me from being one of these front-page Wall Street Journal hard-luck types is that I went to law school and can read a regulation, and finance and accounting degrees didn't hurt, so that I could figure out the pre-tax value of NOT having to pay interest over a period. (Whew, finally a period in this paragraph, eh?) Well, the whole saga would not make interesting reading, but the sense I get is that it would be well familiar to many people on this board.
