Do you want them for income or for growth? I can speak to the income side. XOM is a good overall choice but its dividend is puny at under 2%. CVX is better. Still, I have both. In the utilities area I like FPL, D and SO. All have good dividend raise track records. PG is about the best consumer non-durable in the galaxy. I also have MO which seems to just mint money. I can't believe how many people are still smoking cigarettes. These people must be deep in health denial. Financials are not always in favor but they always pay good dividends. My choices are C, WB, WFC and BBT. I don't own but may add BAC to my portfolio next year. Finally you have to have GE and some MMM in a balanced dividend portfolio. I used to have pharma but got out completely when it started to get savaged a couple years ago. Other than JNJ I wouldn't touch pharma until after the 2008 presidential elections since the dems always seem to have their knives sharpened for big pharma. This is a start. I'm sure other readers have other additions.
