Does a name like McMurphy precede a name like Maker in an alphabetical list? I know I used to see that sort of thing all the time. But nowadays, I often see a name like Maker coming first. Is there some clear rule or guideline about these cases?Back in the day when I was a file clerk, lo! these many years, Mc and Mac could either go ahead of all the other M's or it they could be filed strictly alphabetically with the Mac going before Mb and the Mc coming after. One way was called "the way the phone company does it." I forget which. The only rule was to be consistent within your filing set.MOI
