Does everyone here agree that I could not get a monitor today that I could
connect to external speakers. Ideally, I would want to use my B&Ws -- but
I guess that is not possible, yes, no?

Checked out a few random monitors on Amazon, all had audio out. Some had internal speakers, some did not. Whether you could use your existing speakers would be a function of how they connect. I don't know why a monitor would not connect to external speakers vs a TV.

Have you considered getting an AV receiver? Upside is the box takes a huge number and variety of inputs and sends only one signal at a time to the monitor/TV. Really simplifies the whole process as well as offering flexibility now and in the future. Just a thought as everything today is cheaper than they were 'back when'. Once you have a receiver that meets your input needs, any TV/monitor will do to receive its signal.
