IOW, if I go to buy a new USB cable, how can I be sure to get the right kind?

If it's a charge-only cable, they will say so. Devices drawing more than 900 mA (I think it is) are supposed to do that in a charge-only mode, with no data connection, no matter what cable you use.

I don't think there are any USB1 cables, you just just USB2 cables for low-speed devices.

USB3 has different connectors than USB2, which are usually color coded blue (inside). Don't get a USB3 cable unless the phone and your computer uses USB3. You can use USB2 cables with USB3 devices, they just won't go at the higher speed.
