Don't be bitter with the folks at the IRS. It's really not their job to advise you on your tax situation. That's the job of your accountant or attorney. It sounds like this wasn't handled correctly by the estate in the first place.

If you're bothered that the tax laws are complicated and require the use of tax advisors, complain to Congress - they're the ones that have made tax law so complicated, not the IRS.

No, I don't work for the IRS, I just sympathize with them getting dumped on by Congress...
