Don't buy SIRI if you are just starting out. You could get lucky. Build a foundation of a few profitable companies, especially if they have average to low debt compared to others in their industry.

An index fund (or exchange traded funds) will add some diversification.

Once you have that, set aside a small proportion of your portfolio for high risk investments. That percent might be slightly larger if retirement is many many years away.
