The relevant comparison will be different for different funds.
You might compare International funds with the MSCI index, North American funds with the S & P 500, Australian with the AllOrds, Global tech with the Nasdaq, etc etc. Usually it is pretty obvious what you should compare it to. Most indexes can also be divided into smaller indexes eg AllOrds100,All Industrials, Dow Transport, Russell 2000. It's just a matter of picking apples to compare with apples.
