a few other random thoughts.

-- Even if slowing deaths down does not reduce the total death toll (which it probably does, by NOT overwhelming the ICUs and hospital beds); isn't it better that the people who died later, got to live a few more days? WHat exactly is the point in killing off people quicker?
-- Damage to the economy - if Covid-19 ran rampant, and a whole lot more people died (both young and old), would the damage to the economy be any less? Sensible people would still be weary of working together in closed confined spaces. Added to the stress of stagnant wages for the lower-paying jobs, would be the stress of playing Russian roulette every time you show up for work. So employers would have to incentivize the workers more.
-- A point made by Jim, previously; slowing down the spread also gives more chance of a good vaccine being developed and administered, thus saving some more lives.
-- How much economy is hurt by shutting down one sector (Consumer Discretionary)? I don't think movie theaters, gyms and concerts are vastly important to the GDP. The first two are barely profitable anymore. Travel, tourism, cruises, Disneyland etc are a bit more, but not exactly up there with tech, health care or even utilities in terms of economic impact. The "important" sectors are still open. So the trade-off of not closing down large gatherings, is marginal benefit to the economy against exponentially more deaths.
