Economist Tyler Cowen, a Macron supporter, looks at the malaise plaguing first world developed nations. He nails it. But he has no solution. And i suspect neither does anyone else because it is about the decline of the West’s power & status. No way to bring that back.

But here’s the problem: The West is experiencing a loss of relative status, due to diminished power and influence. Western societies, including France, are being transformed by immigration beyond what many of their native-born citizens had expected. The rising prominence of terror, migration and security issues have boosted some of the less salubrious sides of the right wing. Add to that mix wage stagnation and the increasingly common view — held by 91 percent in France — that today’s children will not have better lives than their parents. Finally, the decline of organized religion, especially pronounced in Western Europe, has created a spiritual vacuum and a crisis of meaning.

My bolded sentences are key.

The US reign as the world’s sole superpower has been cut short by the rise of China. China’s long range strategy thinking & predatory trade policies have been a one-two punch to the costly US’s Perpetual War agenda projection of power which has demonstrated US weakness. The divisiveness of the US has also resulted in a failure to implement infrastructure improvement within the USA adding fuel to the rise of China. US real GDP growth has been subpar since 2000. US political & economic strategy is short term & reactive rather than inspirational & foreword thinking.

Citizens will put up with a lot if their situation results in a better life for their children. Take that away; Katie bar the door!. Parents will rise & demand change to protect their children’s. But perhaps there is no solution. The rise of less developed nations & improvement of world reduction of poverty comes at a cost. And that cost is the decline of the West’s working class economic situation.
