One of our political parties is offering to make student loans interest free. Wouldn't that just put student loans at the bottom of the list when it comes to paying down debt? Of course the party making the promise are currently #3 and could end up #4 if the Greens do well.

Having dodged student debt myself by the simple expedient of knowing full well that at the time I was in high school we didn't have student loans yet and with 2 brothers and five sisters there was no money anyway.... besides I was excited about the military. Somewhat amusingly at the end of my military "Combat Systems Officer" programming training I was informed that I was entitled to an Associate Degree in Computer Science ... I was too busy getting ready for a move to Germany and not really all that interested to apply. }};-D

I (and my employer) did however ensure that neither of my daughters had to take on Student debt in University. Should add, I am aware of the US situation.

By Jessica Vomiero National Online Journalist Global News

A petition circulating online is calling for the elimination of interest charges on federal and provincial student loans.

With Canadian students collectively owing over $28 billion in student loans to all levels of government, The Canadian Federation of Students has posted several Facebook ads about this issue, in addition to launching an online petition to have interest charges scrapped.

Tim,

Do your daughters actually realize how much of their own formidable success (via education and common sense) can be traced directly back to the fact that you grew up in a big family of very modest means?

I know that my own dad's hardscrabble raising and self-paid education contributed to my respect for both money and for education.

I'm really sorry. Our political candidates' give-away programs have infected across the border.

Oh we have our own infectious politicians ... though you won't see handouts to Billionaires.... probably because they are only allowed one vote and can't legally bribe politicians?

Ah, finally something wife and I can use! }};-D

Now if he were to get to military pensions ... too much?

I must confess our military retirees actually do pretty well since they also qualify for CPP and OAS. Toss in the tax free disability pensions that many of them qualify for along with subsidized supplemental healthcare insurance and none that I know appear to be suffering.

The polling shows a dead heat between the Liberals (center) and Conservatives (right). Meanwhile the Greens are falling behind the 3rd place NDP (both left). Still nearly five weeks to go. The NDP announced intentions to add Dental Care to current Medicare ... which is busy place since there is also discussion of Pharacare. Since the NDP could at best hold the balance in a minority government ... stand by for loud noises. }};-@

Liberals will increase old age security, CPP benefits if re-elected: Trudeau

The Canadian Press

FREDERICTON -- Justin Trudeau is promising to do more to boost incomes for seniors, widows and widowers.

He says a re-elected Liberal government would increase old age security by an extra 10 per cent once a senior turns 75, and will boost the Canada Pension Plan survivor's benefit by 25 per cent.

Trudeau made the announcement at a lawn bowling club in Fredericton, a riding the Liberals picked up in 2015 as part of their sweep of the Atlantic provinces.

While the Liberals -- and other parties -- have been targeting young families in the early stages of this campaign, voters over the age of 65 are often those who most reliably show up at the polls.

"Our parents have worked so hard and sacrificed so much to give us a good life," Trudeau said.

"Once they get to retirement they shouldn't have to worry about their savings running out."
