Everyone keeps talking about how much damage a dog can do to your house. Crates are a wonderful thing. If you crate train your dog early on, they can become quite happy in them.

Just as you wouldn't leave a child unsupervised all day, your dog shouldn't be left to damage everything or outside in the heat/cold. Our dog is in her crate for a few hours a day while we are at work. She goes in on her own and naps on the weekends with the door open. It is like a den and dogs feel secure in them.

If you are worried that an animal would spend too much time in the crate because you are gone too long each day, I would not recommend even having a dog because they do company and just like anyone, they can get lonely if left alone for extended periods.
