The Wall Street Journal reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating whether Exxon failed to publicly report the potential impact of climate regulations on its future business–the type of investigation also being conducted by the New York Attorney General. The Wall Street Journal reports that the SEC is also investigating whether Exxon failed to “de-book” some of its oil and gas reserves in the face of low oil prices–in other words, that Exxon has been claiming valuable assets that it does not actually have, given the poor state of the oil and gas industry.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating whether Exxon failed to publicly report the potential impact of climate regulations on its future business–the type of investigation also being conducted by the New York Attorney General.

Rather impossible to do when various regulators and politicians alternately want to 1) outlaw your product; 2) apply tax incentives to slowly eliminate demand for your product; 3) subsidize your competitors; 4) prosecute vague "environmental" crimes; 5) compel you produce thirty different blends of your products and rotate some of them seasonally to meet the virtuous whims of different regulatory agencies.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp won a major victory in a closely-watched lawsuit on Tuesday when a judge ruled that the company did not defraud investors out of up to $1.6 billion by hiding the true cost of climate change regulation.

Exxon said that the ruling affirmed the company’s position that the investigation was “baseless.”

“We provided our investors with accurate information on the risks of climate change,” spokesman Casey Norton said in a statement.

The New York judge issued his ruling in December, clearing Exxon of the investor fraud allegations. He wrote that the attorney general had failed to establish that any investor was misled, but added: "nothing in this opinion is intended to absolve Exxon from responsibility for contributing to climate change."
