This is a follow up to my original post on this topic:

I am acutely aware of how hard it is for a "true" fan to root against his own team. So I wonder: is there ANY situation where I could whole-heartedly want my team to lose?

Here is a situation I think might be close:

Your team has a record of 2-13 and is playing the last Monday Night game of the season.

You know going into the game knowing that if you win you will be tied for dead last place in the NFL with three other teams. Those three other teams just happen to be the two teams you already beat and the team you are playing Monday Night.

Since you beat all of these teams head-to-head, you will get the fourth pick in the draft and without question your prized prospect (top QB or RB or whatever) will be lost. The point is that YOUR guy will definitely be gone by the 4th pick.

On the other hand, if your team loses, you will have the top pick and get your guy.

What do you do?

Does your attitude change based on who you are playing that week?

Do you just ignore the game entirely and then huff in disgust "IT FIGURES!" whatever the result?

If my team is that bad, they probably don't know what to do with a higer pick, anyway. They would just draft Lawrence Phillips.

The latter. I heard Marv Levy say that it doesn't matter if you pick 1st or 21st, you never really know who is going to work out. I'll buy that. Plus if your crappy team does win, it is a beacon of hope for next season. Somethng to get you through the spring and summer.

PS. I'm a Seahawks fan, so I have lots of experience in these matters.

The Eagles were 0-12 one year and a 'lock' to draft OJ Simpson. Then they went and won their last 2 or 3 games to finish next-to-last.

Remember who they got?

Didn't think so.

I say root for your team and let things play out in the draft.

In 1981 the 2-13 Patriots played the 1-14 Colts on the last week of the season. The Colts held the tie-breaker so the loser would get the first pick in the draft. The Colts won the Stupor Bowl, NE drafted Ken Sims who did little to justify his position in the draft.

(the Colts drafted a nobody too, but that doesn't make my point so I won't mention it.)

They got Leroy Keyes at #3. I guess in that light, you can claim that they missed out on the opportunity to draft the greatest murderer in NFL history. Before we lament the tough break, anyone remember who went #4?

4 Pittsburgh Steelers Joe Greene DT North Texas State

Yeah, too bad he didn't go to Philly. Then he'd have no rings, but at least naj would pimp the hell out of him.

Vinatieri still sucks, he's worse than an injured Akers.
