I've always thought of financial independence as the goal, rather than retirement. That is, freedom from need to work for a living is what you hope to achieve. So for me, it's financial independence rather than retirement. In fact, I achieved financial independence through investments many years before I left my field of employment. Owning your own time, with the ability to walk away from any job, is a great feeling.
