I wrote a blog story for the Motley Fool today entitled Five Companies for a Baltimore Portfolio about mixing a little local civic pride into your portfolio:

I actually live in Montgomery County, but since Baltimore is the flagship city of our state, I made it the centerpiece of my story. Enjoy!

How about doing a Montgomery County piece for those of us who live there? :-)

I thought about that, but decided to do Baltimore first. Maybe I'll write the MC blog post next. I wrote about Baltimore first because "Montgomery County, MD" doesn't have the "oh, I know where that is" ring to it for a nation-wide blog audience like "Baltimore" does for the headline. I'll have to work on that.

There are quite a few public companies with headquarters in Montgomery County that I know of:

Marriott (MAR), Bethesda
Choice Hotels (CHH), Silver Spring
Host Hotels (HST), Bethesda
Lockheed Martin (LMT), Bethesda
Discovery Networks (DISCA, DISCK), Silver Spring
Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRT), Rockville
United Therapeutics (UTHR), Silver Spring

Coventry Healthcare (CVH) is in Bethesda too, but they are in the process of being acquired by Aetna, so they will not be locally-headquartered for long.

Howard County has enough public companies to write about too.

The only Maryland companies I actually own are Under Armour and Discovery Networks, but a few of these other ones have been on my watchlist.
