We don't appear to have too many Fools in LA! Are we last on this list too?? Maybe it's because we have too many fools....

Hey psmart! Recently becoming a Fool. Plan on buying and holding for the long term. Soon I hope, I'll be getting into the foolish four approach. Wish me luck! Hope you're having a great time as a Fool!

Welcome! Glad to have another Fool in LA. I'm into LTBH, too. Haven't done the F4.
Good Luck!

Not quite. As of this posting, the other boards with fewer postings than Louisiana's are those of Montana, West Virginia, Rhode Island, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Delaware and Idaho. However, I do look forward to the day when we can talk about how far out in the lead we are rather than how many slots we are removed from the bottom.

We do have and have had our share of fools, especially in state government. They fly in the face of Foolishness by not only propogating a very unFoolish behavior, gambling, but doing it in such a way that the part of this industry (yes I do believe it can fill a significant niche in the touism industry if handled properly) where we had gained a legitimate marketshare and a foothold free from competition, horse-racing, has been diluted by everything from the lottery to powerball to riverboat casinos to Native American casinos to miniature land-based casinos in the form of video poker halls.

Of course, I don't know what I am complaining about here. As long as regular fools are willing to fork over a voluntary tax to the croupier I may not ever have to worry about paying a realistic tax rate on my home and personal property :)

I just got turned on to messsage boards, investing and the MF scene in general. Since mid-June I have read "TMF Investment Guide", "You Have More Than You Think" and I just checked out Peter Lynch's "Beating the Street" from the local library. Funny thing though, neither of TMF books were available in the library. Maybe that's a tip we need to pick up on and ask our libraries if they have these tomes and if not ask them to get them and put them on their "new editions" or "recommended read" lists.

At any rate, I am just getting started. I just got out of consumer debt after fighting it for 10+ years. My only obligation, other than food, lights, water, etc. and paying myself by saving, is a house note which I recently refinanced, taking it from a thirty year mortgage with twenty-eight years remaining to a fifteen year insstrument that I have set up on a ten year amortization scheudle. I got confirmation that my online broker received my initial deposit today and I will be establishing an F4.2 plus Microsoft portfolio asap.

I know there are more Fools out there like you and I. Keep lurking and posting here, especially posting, and we will get things turned around yet.

Fool Speed Ahead

Welcome! Sounds like you are well on the way to being a Fool.
On the gambling: we are in an area that turned off the video poker machines last week, and that was the only form of gambling in our area. For one small town, that will be a loss since they had one of the truck stop casinos - and actually had trucks!. Not that I think those were the best of ideas, but it was bringing in several dollars for them. They used to be a BAD speed trap town, and guess now they'll head back that direction to recoup money.
My library didn't have any of the books either (is that a true sign of Fooldom - trying to borrow the books?!) In fact, didn't see any newer financial books - most were from the 1980s.
Hopefully we will get a few more Fools in our midst, and just might get out in front on a few lists one day!

Hey PSmart!

I took the plunge yesterday. Opened an account with ETrade last week and put everthing into a F4 port as of 7-7-99, plus Microsoft. The F4 contains GM, CAT, Sears, and EK. I hesitated slightly due to concerns on what a rise in interest rates over the next year can do to CAT and GM but since I don't plan to do anything other than LTB&H I set those fears aside and clicked away.

Let's keep this board going. I have some ideas that I am going to post in a few minutes that will hopefully get the traffic going.
