Football is one of the more physically damaging sports - players need to make a ton of money when they are younger since their playing years aren't very long.

The average career of any pro athlete is far shorter than the career of almost any other person, white or blue collar. It's sad that apparently so many of them can't even go a few months with no pay check. What is their plan for when they "retire"? Sure, some of them may move on to high profile coaching or media commentary, but most are going to end up out of the spotlight.

On the flip side, I worked with a former giants lineman while he was interning during his MBA. I can't remember what he drove, but it was a Toyota or a Honda I think - nothing fancy. He seems to be one of the few that managed to save what they were making during their pro years.
