For some reason the word "scam" is coming to mind. I'm not sure why.

Good catch, I think. AppleCare for iPhones hasn't "just become available." I got AppleCare when I got my iPhone (1st gen). I usually get AppleCare at least for portable Macs, and iPhones are portable squared, so it seemed a no-brainer. AppleCare extends warranty to a second year only. I remembered this from the time I bought the iPhone, and it's still noted on Apple's iPhone AppleCare web page.

So, either Apple changed policy and hasn't updated the web page, or the OP misheard the phone call, or it's fishy. Since Apple has never called me to offer AppleCare, I might suspect the last.
