Out of curiosity, how do brokerages, or Wall Street, trade fractional shares? If someone buys a fraction of a share, what happens to the other fraction? I've never understood the behind-the-scenes knowledge of fractional shares. Obviously we can trade them now, but what about the fractions that always existed for dividend reinvestment since ages ago? Are they created/tracked in the same way?

Like I say, just a question of curiosity. If there is an article that explains this, please link and I will read for myself. Thanks in advance...
