from a value standpoint, they're hard to beat. and from my experience renting cars, and the people who i know who rent cars, i just cant buy into the "hotrodded, dragraced, abused" school of thinking. unless youre out in vegas buying a rental viper...

How about a Pontiac GrandAm that was driven from Tampa to Miami in about 4 hours (a 325 +/-mile trip). I was going about 115 across Alligator Alley when a blue-hair pulled in front of me - stood on the brakes hard - the engine redlined past 7500 rpm when the tranny dropped it into 4th gear.

FWIW; I generally DON'T abuse rental cars, but I'm not as gentle with them as I am my personal car. Also, rental car companies will not rent to anyone under 21 (there may be exceptions, but I don't know of any) and they tack on horrible surcharges to anyone under 25. For example, Thrifty hit me for $25 a DAY for being under 25.
