From former IRS "contact rep". Depends on which department is hiring. Accounts Management means customer service; setting up installment agreements for balance dues still in notice status: checking on status of refunds, analysing the entries on IRS "books" which is basically accounts receivable with tons of special indicators etc. Accounts Management does not answer tax law questions. Real Customer Service answers tax law questions (called answering the 1040 line). This is done with a "probe and response guide". You follow a script and ask the caller specific questions and their answer leads you to another question until the final answer. Such as "Can I file married if my husband lives in France?" If the job is with Exam then you would be talking to people who have been denied or questioned about their EIC. Exam job is grade 7, accounts management is grade 8, 1040 line is presently grade 8 but may someday be grade 9. Email me if you want more info. The test is general intelligence testing stuff, anything in the 80's or 90's will put you way ahead of the crowd. Formal college education counts for a lot in the hiring procedure.
