From my understanding, the qualitative difference between libertarianism and whatever you want to call the mainstream ideology is that libertarians reject the principle of utilitarianism to justify government intrusion into people's lives.

I neither fully accept nor reject the idea of utilitarianism and I am a full on libertarian. Mill and Hayak were bothe utilitarians, and while neither of them were "pure" by modern standards I think they would be quite comfortable calling themselves libertarians.
