From what I have read, it depends on the time of year you cut it back. But 3 years on it shouldn't matter. It allegedly blooms on new growth, so it's supposed to get cut back/pruned right after it blooms. Which is what I just did.

I had three original bushes that had grown (been neglected) into a jungle of six and reseeded themselves in a ring around all of that. I cut them all back to a reasonable size. TWT next April on the blooms!
