FDA issues Class I recall status to Baxter's Colleague Pump
By David B. Wilkerson
Last update: 9:21 a.m. EDT March 11, 2009
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Baxter International Inc. said Wednesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified its recall of Colleague Volumetric Infusion Pumps in the U.S. as a Class I recall, representing the greatest potential hazard to the public. In January, the medical device maker issued a letter to customers warning that failure codes in the pumps may cause them to alarm and stop infusing while delivering critical medication and fluids to patients. The Colleague pumps have also been known to overheat, resulting in smoke and fire, if not properly cleaned or if there is a problem with the insulation of the battery harness, the company noted. Further, there have been a number of damaged battery messages when the pump is used as a battery-operated device. There have been serious injuries and deaths related to such failures, Baxter said. Customers with questions may contact Baxter at 1-800-THE-PUMP (1-800-843-7867) between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central time. End of Story
