Generally airplanes take off with full tanks?

Unfortunately, the "WhiningWolverine", aka "CryinHawaiian", who was a DC-10, then DC-9 driver for Northwest left this board over a decade ago.

It occurs to me that an airline beancounter would calculate how much extra fuel was burned carrying around more fuel than the plane needed for it's route that day, and press for the fuel load to be closely calculated, and not one pound more loaded.

Ken was also an ex-A6 driver on the Nimitz.
