Germany isn't building nearly enough new renewable energy to achieve these goals, along with closing all of its remaining nuclear power plants in the next two years.

For the first 4 months of 2021, Germany has added 1.33 GW of new solar, and 0.55 GW of new wind capacity. Given the poor capacity factors of solar and wind, these new additions will not come close to replacing the generation from nuclear power, which last year produced 60 TWh of electricity. All of Germany's solar panels only produced 51 TWh last year.

Power generation from coal was down last year in Germany, but it is back up this year. For the first 4 months of 2021, hard and brown coal have produced 35% more electricity than for the same time in 2020. Wind power generation has decreased 25% for the first 4 months compared to 2020, and solar power has decreased about 7%. Power generation from coal is up, while wind and solar are down. Half of Germany's nuclear power plants are scheduled to shut down by the end of 2021, with the other half at the end of 2022.
