Thank you everyone, yes that is the problem exactly, if I could work, we'd be fine. We had been whittling away at our debt but on one income it was sometimes only $10 over the minimum and if anything went wrong, like a car problem, it went on the cards. While at home, I took the opportunity to go back to school for interior design so that I would always have an option work-wise as we all know that the law is not very flexible and we move with my husband's work. I wasn't able to finish before we left. The good thing is that I feel confident in doing that too and have advertised my services. I haven't had any replies though and in Italy, interiors are done by architects mostly and for not very much money. Even lawyers make 1000 Euro a month starting out here!!! They live at home and inherit property so they can spend their money on clothes and Vespas. They don't have student loans or credit cards.
And the international orgs have a hiring freeze so no one else will be coming but, i will be advertisinf everywhere I can that I can do design and teach English to and help lawyers with editing English translations so something may come up there. I am hopeful. I am also doing culinary workshops with a friend-teaching people how to make Italian food as I grew up in a restaurant. And I am launching a new website, an interiors site where you can buy lots of the lovely things I find in markets (it's called Vagabond Home/Style). So I'm out there.

Now I am trying to consolidate and defer my private student loans-I found one that does a fixed rate-Education Finance Partners-it's high but not much higher than my variable rates now! I am also trying our Prosper to try and lower our interest rates so we can snowball one and then the other two. I'm really hankering for another child before it's too late and hope to buy a property someday. We put %10 in retirement and all the family pays toward my son's 529 although the international orgs pay for college. So it's just the credit cards and loans that we need to pay off-sorry to be so long but I need to wite this out. Thanks so much for your help and support-I hope to be able to do the same for you! Ask me anything about Italy!
