Rocky Road for Detroit's Big Three

The big three U.S. automakers -- General Motors (NYSE: GM), Ford (NYSE: F), and DaimlerChrysler AG's (NYSE: DCX) Chrysler division --report their May sales this coming Tuesday. From the looks of it, many people skipped their chances to cash in on fat rebates or zero-percent financing, leaving the automakers in the uncomfortable position of weighing the costs and benefits of even deeper incentives.

Incentives during the first two weeks of May averaged $4,400 a vehicle, according to an article on That's an astonishing amount -- but it doesn't seem enough to entice buyers.
