What you said is right. BTUs added within the structure's exterior envelope is the same regardless of where you add it. The only difference is where/if you feel it and how effective the envelope near it is at retarding its escape.

The same is true for air conditioning in the Summer. Except for the following:

The main reason to get the airflow directly into/through the target areas is more to do with de-humidification while utilizing the air conditioning during the Summer. Water molecules in the air can not migrate through barriers as easily as BTUs of heat energy can.
