A new addition to my bookshelf: "The Forest for the Trees" by Betsy Lerner. It's written by a former editor who worked at several of the publishing powerhouses (e.g., Simon & Schuster, Doubleday) and who is now an agent. The first half of the book focuses on the writing life, and the second half focuses on the inner workings of publishing. I learned a LOT about how books are acquired, edited, and prepared for launch (and learned all the different ways authors drive their editors crazy!). Definitely worth reading. It's like reading a long letter from an experienced friend inside the biz.

Oh, I thought you said "prepared for "lunch"?
