Great fun building up a strawman, and then taking crapshoots, no? ;-)

Thus, for example, they will note that Bush has personal ties to oil company executives . . . and that Iraq has lots of oil . . . ergo, the true purpose of the invasion of Iraq must be to enrich oil companies.

Whoever claimed enriching oil companies was the primary rationale?

The Iraq war is a piece in an overall strategy of ensuring sole super power status for decades to come.

Naturally, given America's energy consumption binge, free flow of oil is a crucial element.

Helping dear friends (and campaign supporters) is a mere, albeit necessary, side effect.

since there's no evidence of genocidal tendencies in Bush's past — it presupposes the innate capacity of the analyst to peer into the furthest recesses of his soul.

No need for a pompous argument. Nah, c'mon, a tad of Machiavellism is all it takes.

The truth, I reiterate, is that America is the most benevolent world power in the history of the planet.

Well, America has been benevolent towards Europe. I don't think it can claim the same wrt Central or South America, or the Arabian peninsula. Overall, England would probably steal the benevolence crown if there was such a thing. However, a competition on who is the "least bad empire" is hardly the point. How about not striving to be an empire?

If the US were truly benevolent...

* it wouldn't need military basis in 100+ nations
* it wouldn't spend $400 b ++ (official figure) on its military
* it wouldn't overthrow governments whose policies it doesn't like

I compared the antiwar movement to a religious cult [...]

Ahem, wouldn't this be nore applicable to ...?
